WordPress 2.6 Compatible Plugins. So Soon?

WPlogo150WordPress 2.6 is due out July 14th which just happens to be less than two days from now.

What??? So soon???

I can hear the outraged cries already. It does seem that the 2.5 series was just launched a few weeks ago but in all actuality it’s been over 3 months since 2.5 was released on march 29th. To give you more of an idea about this; after WordPress 2.1 was released, the powers that be at WordPress decided to adopt a more frequent release period which would allow for more reasonable goals to be set for each new release instead of having to cram 6 months or more of enhancements, bug fixes and what-have-you’s into one just one major release.

It would also might keep the average WP site owner from crying out in horror due to all the massive changes each new major release tended to bring along with it plus the 2 or 3 minor security and bug fix updates that always seemed to happen in between the majors. The same goes for the plugins and plugin authors. It stands to reason that if a new milestone release contains say between 100 to 200 enhancements and bug fixes instead of 400 to 500, there should be significantly less numbers of popular plugins going south when a WordPress site owner upgrades his or her install.

Or at least that was what was intended.

To me, these fine intentions really came together when the 2.5 series only saw one maintenance release and the new 2.6 release does not bring any huge amount of changes but rather a fine rounding out of what was begun with 2.5 including several enhancements to the Admin UI.

But what about plugin compatibiltiy? Haven’t heard a lot of noise like we did with when 2.5 was in the oven so here’s the best info I could get my hands on…

First of all is the terribly incomplete list of plugins that are compatible with 2.6 at the WordPress Codex. As much as I love WordPress, the compatibilty lists always seem to take a back seat at every new release. However, this time I have a feeling that those currently testing 2.6 or running thier sites on the beta builds, like your truly, aren’t seeing a whole lot of compatibilty issues going on so take heart when you see how how incomplete the list currently is.

Secondly, adding to what’s currently listed in the above link, I’ll add my own list of all the plugins I personally know of that work in WordPress 2.6 beta 3:

Note: This is only a partial list taken from those plugins I’ve currently tested and use myself. I’m sure there are more out there that work with 2.6.
